Rarity: Base model still regularly appears on the second-hand market, but they do not sit. unit is sought after; prices are climbing. Premier version is a decent amount rarer, appearing far less.
Appeal: Great-looking faceplate and Deep blue OEL screen, icon Dolphin screen saver, very attractive background animations that show off the perfect blacks of the OEL screen very well. Premier version arguably looks even better with a brighter coloured metallic trim.
Performance: standard, midrange, high-quality old-school unit. Perfect audio quality; CD player sounds excellent, but nothing exuberant, standard pre-out voltage, decent 3-band EQ, does the job well.
Reliability:
Functionality
Extremely reliable and Robust unit that will outlast a lot of the units made today; yet to see major malfunctions with these units. Sometimes the volume nobs and D-PAD can be quite tired; maybe not the strongest built in that regard, but yet to see any fail. The screen is really good on this unit, not seen these get the classic lines on the screen at all yet. They seem possibly more resistant than earlier head units.
Cosmetic
Not the best when it comes to cosmetic wear; the labels for the buttons (especially the 4 main buttons around the screen) are not super durable and often wear off easily. A lot of examples will have labels partially worn. People will often opt to remove the label completely with alcohol, restoring the clean look. This fixes the issue and looks good, just as long as you know the button layout. The chrome coating on the plastic trim around the volume nob and D-pad is also not the best, often showing wear but can easily be touched up.
